Gladwin, Mississippi bladesmith makes the headlines

Mike Malosh was recently discussed in an article ran by the Gladwin County Record. The focus of the article is Mike's fantastic blade work. They look very nice. Most of the blades feature deer antler as a handle material. Mike's work can be viewed and purchased from his website.

Woodville Museum starts fundraising to build blacksmith shop

The Mail Tribune is reporting that the Woodville Museum in Rogue River, Oregon is starting collections for a blacksmith shop. Contact information and other general information about the Museum is available online. Donationsmay be made to a blacksmith shop fund at any branch of Evergreen Federal Bank, or by mail.

Curran Homestead opens up a blacksmithing school in Maine

I was delighted to see this piece being ran by WCSH6. They are covering the opening of a blacksmithing school out at the Curran Homestead in Maine. The story has some images and an embedded video as well. They have 8 workstations and are running classes Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evening. USAID helps rural artisans in Liberia

ReliefWeb is running a short piece on some aide work that USAID is handling in Liberia. The focus of the article is on a blacksmith named Saah Fassi. It is an interesting read to see what they are doing, and inspiring to think about what Saah has been through, and how he continues to work. The physical limitations alone would be enough to stop most people.

The Pittsburgh Area Artist Blacksmiths Association (PAABA) is pleased to have
Barry Wheeler, Bruce Washington and Chuck Hughes demonstrate at John Groll's
Shop in Pittsburgh, PA on February 20, 2010. Barry is known for his creative
and imaginative sculptures often admired at SOFA. Barry was the first place
winner in 2009.

Texas A & M hires a blacksmith farrier

There was a lot of press about Texas A & M yesterday. I found stories here, here, and here. The big news? A full time blacksmith-farrier being on staff. Jason Wilson-Maki is the farrier they hired. His work involves a lot of prep for the animal hospital they run, custom shoe work, and general farrier duties.

Discussion on Napa Valley blacksmith trade history to be given

The St. Helena Star has an event announcement about lecture to be given on the blacksmith trade in the early Napa Valley history. If you are a Napa Valley or Blacksmith history buff, then this talk might be for you. As part of the piece they will go over a specific local shop, that was established in the 1890's. Jules Evans-White will be giving the talk on Sunday. Feb. 14 at 2:30 pm at the Napa County Historical Society. The historical society is located at 1219 First Street in Napa. The Napa County Historical Society has a website which has more information available.

An interview with an off beat blacksmith

The Post-Tribune is running an interview. with artist Dwayne Bulla. Dwayne does non-traditional sculpture work, largely from recycled and found pieces. Some of his work is available for view online, in the gallery at his website, www.dbulla.com.
